“Deadpool 2,” Reviewed: A Deadening Sequel That Feels like Simulacrum

Every time she's onscreen, Domino brings a curiosity quality to the movie, and it's usually something imaginative and fun. So I walked into Deadpool 2 fully prepared to feel left out, like Hawkeye in. The new additions like Brolin and Beetz work, so do some movie quotes and 4th wall jokes, but unfortunately the potty level is in the majority. There can never be a sense of stakes with a gleeful, fourth wall-breaking cartoon of a character who bounces back like Wile E.

If you were one of the many fans who enjoyed the irreverent antics of the first Deadpool, then you'll enjoy Deadpool 2 as it's more or less the same movie with a slightly limited freshness date. I was worried that a Deadpool sequel would fall into some of the same detractions that a Guardians of the Galaxy sequel did, and this is still applicable. Despite this rather grim-sounding premise, a lot of how much you like Deadpool 2 will depend on your tolerance for the ratatat reference-a-minute style that Reynolds is so good at.

Deadpool has the wit of a Bugs Bunny working very blue and gets flattened more than Wile E. Coyote on an average day. While there are plenty of gags, some miss the mark — though the hit percentage is decent — and everything involving Deadpool's supporting friends, bartender Weasel T. Miller and cabbie Dopinder Karan Soniis pretty much recycled from the first movie. The newcomers are strong across the board, though. Also, it drops the needle on since that one with the large sinking boat.

Sympathetic characters die, and children are abused by authority figures. Reynolds and Brolin look like they're having the time of their lives playing off of each other, and -- spoiler alert!
